The council's stated direction
The council's direction is set by its Community Vision and Council Plan 2025–2029, which also contains the Municipal Public Health and Wellbeing Plan. It is delivered through an Action Plan, the annual Budget and a ten-year Financial Plan (2025–2035), and the council reviews the plan each year. The Community Vision was developed with a 13-member Community Panel and the councillors.
The Council Plan has three objectives — Customer Focused Alpine, Sustainable and Resilient Alpine, and Vibrant and Healthy Alpine — informed by six strategic directions: focus on core service delivery; empowering communities in decision making; transparent and accountable leadership; evidence-based and sustainable decision making; partnerships to achieve great results; and celebrating our achievements.
The 2026–27 Budget, adopted on 30 June 2026, funds a $14.14 million capital works program — including $2.1 million for footpaths, trails and cycleways (new connections in Tawonga, Myrtleford and Bright), $1.8 million for road renewals, $1.1 million for building renewals and $530,000 for a new public open space with amenities in Tawonga South. It also plans to finalise the Tourism and Events Strategy, complete the Rural Directions Strategy and Heritage Review, continue installing solar and batteries on council buildings, and scope a Bright Library refurbishment. The council says 97 people took part in pre-budget engagement and eight submissions were made on the draft.
Underway now
Mountain View Children's Centre redevelopment, Myrtleford
Planning and final design; start August 2026, completion expected mid-2028A new early learning centre next to the existing Mountain View Children's Centre at 55 Prince Street, Myrtleford, taking capacity from 97 to 160 places (66 long day care, 47 sessional kindergarten and 47 integrated kindergarten). Funded with $9.639 million from the Victorian Government through the Victorian School Building Authority and Department of Education.

Nimmo Pedestrian Bridge, Myrtleford
Fabrication underway; on-site installation planned for spring 2026A new walking and cycling bridge across the Ovens River in Myrtleford, identified as a priority in community consultation after the 2019–20 bushfires and funded by Emergency Management Victoria and the council. The council says complex ground conditions required a more robust structure.
Tawonga South public amenities
Design consultation closed 28 June 2026; $530,000 in the 2026–27 BudgetNew public toilets (including accessible and ambulant toilets) and 11 car parks on land the council bought at 244–252 Kiewa Valley Highway in 2023, in response to long-standing community requests.
Digital connectivity advocacy
Action Plan for Digital Connectivity noted August 2026A 2025 report and a June 2026 action plan on mobile coverage and capacity, including network overloading in Bright during busy visitor periods and reliance on a single tower on Apex Hill. The council will use them to advocate for upgrades in Bright, Porepunkah and other underserviced areas.
Alpine Shire Tourism and Events Strategy
Draft Strategy expected 'later this year'; to be finalised in 2026–27A long-term strategy for managing tourism and events — including a refresh of the Alpine Shire Events Strategy 2021 — that, the council says, balances economic benefit with community expectations, environmental values and local identity. The vision-setting survey has closed and community workshops were scheduled for April and May.
