Mayor & councillors

Alpine Shire is unsubdivided: there are no wards, and all seven councillors are elected by the whole Shire, by proportional representation, at the four-yearly Victorian council elections (last held in October 2024). The councillors elect the Mayor and Deputy Mayor from among themselves; the council holds a mayoral election each year.

Who represents you

Mayor
Cr Sarah NicholasElected unopposed on 16 December 2025 for the rest of the 2025–26 one-year mayoral term, after Cr Gareth Graham — elected Mayor on 25 November 2025 — resigned from the office of Mayor on 5 December 2025. Cr Nicholas's council profile says she has lived in Wandiligong since 1997.
Deputy Mayor
Cr Gareth GrahamElected unopposed on 16 December 2025. The council has set the Deputy Mayor's term to match the Mayor's (one year).
Councillors
7, elected Shire-wide (no wards)Cr John Andersen, Cr Dave Byrne, Cr Jean-Pierre Ronco, Cr Peter Smith and Cr Noah Tanzen, plus the Mayor and Deputy Mayor. The Victorian Electoral Commission lists the same seven (checked September 2026).
Next mayoral election
Expected around November 2026The council set a one-year mayoral term in November 2025 and says the next election must be held as close to the end of the term as practicable. We found no published date (checked September 2026); the council's November 2026 Ordinary Meeting is on 24 November. Victorian mayors are elected by the councillors, not by voters.
Council meetings
Last Tuesday of the month, 5pm — usually Council Chambers, 2 Churchill Avenue, BrightRemaining 2026 dates: 29 September, 27 October, 24 November and 15 December (all in Bright). Some meetings are held in Mount Beauty or Myrtleford. Meetings are open to the public and livestreamed on YouTube.
